FITE NAMED NEW UWG BASEBALL COACH

The University of West Georgia has named Skip Fite to replace former coach Doc Fowlkes, who resigned in May following 19 seasons as head coach. Fite was announced last Friday following 25 seasons as head coach at Augusta State University. The Wolves coach is already on the job.
 
PEACHTREE ROAD RACE

This Independence Day weekend, runners from all over Georgia will line up from Lenox Square to kick off the 40th annual Peachtree Road Race. Carrollton resident and basketball coach Larry Turner says he has run the race almost every year for the past three decades. The race will take place Saturday morning. It is the largest road race in the world.
 
HOLIDAY TRAVEL PERIOD

Georgia State Patrol in Villa Rica is reminding area residents to plan their travels carefully, keeping safety as the number one priority as they prepare for the holiday travel weekend. The 78-hour holiday period begins tonight at 6:00. Traffic crashes during the 2008 holiday period claimed the lives of 22 people statewide. 1,860 traffic crashes were reported and 910 people were injured. Traffic estimates for this year suggest similar numbers.
 
CARROLL COUNTY COMMISSION APPROVES BUDGET

Carroll County Commissioners approved a budget Tuesday which includes the Commission Chairman's proposal of no tax increases and no raises for county employees. Approved amendments also include the return of seperate positions of E-911 Director and Fire Chief, and eliminates the Chairman's proposed Grant Writers position. The budget was approved 6-1 with Chappell the lone vote against the ammended proposal. The County Commissioners are next scheduled to meet Tuesday, July 7th.

 
NEW ELECTION LAWS

Laws are now in effect which will make it possible for individual states and counties to become exempt from the Voting Rights Act, first passed in 1965. According to Carroll County Elections Supervisor Patty Brown-Traylor, the Act affects mostly southern regions, requiring them to receive approval from the U.S. Justice Department for all changes in the election process, including registration, districting, and scheduling. Gaining approval from the Justice Department takes about 60 days for any change. No mention by local officials of intentions to apply for the exempt status has been made as of yet.
 
WEST GEORGIA TECH

As of today, West Central Technical College is officially operating under its new name - West Georgia Technical College. The name change comes as part of a merger between the former West Central Technical College and LaGrange's West Georgia Technical College. President Skip Sullivan says the new name is reflective of the school's expanded capabilities to educate students. On the horizon for West Georgia Technical College is the development of a new campus in Coweta County on a 38-acre tract of land donated in June by the school's Foundation.
 
HOLIDAY TRAVEL

Despite the holiday ahead, gas prices are expected to lower this week in West Georgia. Triple-A Auto Club South Public Relations Director Gregg Laskoski says the national average price of gas has fallen by five cents a gallon over the past week. Road construction projects throughout the state are expected to be put on hold through the holiday travel time. The halt begins Thursday, June 2nd, at noon. Road work will resume Monday morning, July 6th, at 5:00.
 
COMMISH MEETING TONIGHT

What commissioners hope to be the final meeting to decide on a 2009-10 Carroll County budget is scheduled for later this afternoon. Carroll County Commissioners are set to meet at 5:00 to consider the resolution and ordinance, as well as consider the proposed health services agreement for inmate medical care at the Carroll County Detention Center. The meeting is open to the public.
